Design and function The heart of this acceleration sensor is a piezo-ceramic strip of polycrystalline sinter- ed material. Upon electrical polarisation, this material displays a piezoelectric effect: When pressure is applied_ the mechanical loading results in charge separation, or a voltage which can then picked-off by elec- trodes. The piezo bending element is comprised of a bonded structVre containing two inverse- polarized piezo strips, the so-called bimor- phous strips.
